Gloria: 'Music was my salvation'

AOL Music: The day you're no longer with us, what do you want to leave the world with?
Gloria Estefan:
That I'm remembered fondly; that they enjoy my music. Music was an escape, a salvation for me in life. My father was very ill, and I wanted to be strong, that's my nature, my personality. I would shut myself in my room to play and sing, and I cried getting all of my emotions out. I have a great deal of respect for music, and I want to send a message to the universe. I want it so that people feel stronger, or to tell someone they love them, something that communicates with [people].

Gloria Estefan dances back into the spotlight

...Another key motivator for working in the genre must be the artistic opportunity it creates for working with the hippest, most cutting-edge producers. For example, latin crossover superstar Gloria Estefan, 54, bonded across a generation with urban super-producer Pharrell Williams, 38, to craft her sizzling, new beat-heavy release, “Miss Little Havana".

Gloria Estefan is certain the rhythm is going to get you on Miss Little Havana

Fri Sep 30 2011

Gloria Estefan is certain the rhythm is going to get you on Miss Little Havana, her new album largely conceived and produced by Pharrell Williams. The first single, “Wepa,” which Estefan says is just an expression like “woo” or “hey”, is currently climbing Billboard’s dance charts.

It’s been 13 years since Estefan released an all-dance album. Williams took notice and through a shared trainer at the gym, the duo began sending messages back and forth. When they finally met, Williams had already written three songs he hoped Estefan would want to record.
